Circus Fire Memorial to Be Dedicated in July

A memorial to the 168 people who died in the 1944 circus fire will be dedicated on July 6, 2005, the 61st anniversary of the disaster, organizers tell the Hartford Courant. The ceremony was originally planned for this month, but it had to be postponed because a key part of the memorial -- an 8-foot wide bronze medallion centerpiece, engraved with the names of the fire victims -- could not be completed in time. The memorial will stand on the site of the fire, behind the Fred D. Wish Elementary School on Barbour Street, in the city's North End.

Regionalization, Circa 1964

The Hartford Courant published a set of articles in its Sunday editions that looked back at the Town Meeting for Tomorrow, a controversial attempt by the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce to persuade the towns surrounding Hartford to embrace regional government. In the main article, author and former Hartford Times reporter Stephen B. Goddard recalls Arthur J. Lumsden, who spearheaded the effort as president of the Chamber.

It Might Be the Oldest Building in Hartford; It Might Not be Worth Saving

Tom Condon, editor of the Place sections of the Hartford Courant, asks in his latest Sunday column whether it's worthwhile to save the house at 1805 Broad Street, just south of Trinity College. Unless someone buys the house and moves it, Trinity will raze it in about three months to create parking spaces for its new $8 million community sports complex. Some of the house appears to date from about 1750, "which would make it the oldest building and one of only five 18th-century structures left in the city." But Condon also reports that much of the architecture has been altered over the years, raising questions about its historical value.
