{"id":253,"date":"2017-08-07T15:41:33","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T19:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hartfordhistory.net\/blog\/?p=253"},"modified":"2017-08-07T15:47:22","modified_gmt":"2017-08-07T19:47:22","slug":"learn-all-about-sam-colt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hartfordhistory.net\/blog\/2017\/08\/07\/learn-all-about-sam-colt\/","title":{"rendered":"Learn all about Sam Colt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The life of Samuel Colt, the pioneering industrialist behind Hartford&#8217;s Colt firearms factory, will be the subject of a free noontime talk at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cga.ct.gov\/osh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old State House<\/a> on <span class=\"_4n-j _fbReactionComponent__eventDetailsContentTags fsl\" data-testid=\"event-permalink-details\"><strong>Thursday, August 17<\/strong>, by <\/span><span class=\"_4n-j _fbReactionComponent__eventDetailsContentTags fsl\" data-testid=\"event-permalink-details\">Bert Barnett, the National Park Service ranger assigned to the Coltsville National Historical Park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-259 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hartfordhistory.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sam_colt_300x375-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hartfordhistory.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sam_colt_300x375-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.hartfordhistory.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sam_colt_300x375.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 85vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"_4n-j _fbReactionComponent__eventDetailsContentTags fsl\" data-testid=\"event-permalink-details\"> &#8220;Through providing efficient arms required during the 19th century, Colt revolutionized the arms industry and, though not alone in this role, he was unique and undeniably controversial,&#8221; the Old State House says in its announcement.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Registration for the talk isn&#8217;t required, but it is encouraged: <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2uuh70k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;-U&quot;}\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/2uuh70k.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Congress created the national historic park in 2014. The official opening is expected soon, but Barnett already gives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/planyourvisit\/event-listing.htm?eventID=8EB25599-1DD8-B71B-0B9A1955817F419C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walking tours<\/a> of the component properties, including the factory complex, the city&#8217;s Colt Park (formerly part of the Colt estate), and the Church of the Good Shepherd, which Elizabeth Colt commissioned as a memorial to her husband, who was only 47 when he died in 1862.<\/p>\n<p>You can keep up on Coltsville news in a variety of places, among them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the <a href=\"https:\/\/larson.house.gov\/issues\/coltsville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coltsville page<\/a> of Congressman John B.
