"Main Street, Looking South From Asylum Street, Hartford, Conn." Here's to the day when the sidewalks of Main Street are this crowded again. The postcard is postmarked May 1, 1917 -- just a few weeks after the United States' entry into World War I.
This section of Main Street is occupied now by Travelers Plaza - note the Wadsworth Atheneum on the far right. But back in 1907 (the date penciled on the postcard), it was home to two Aetnas: Aetna Insurance, on the left, and the Aetna Life Insurance Company, on the right. The former, known to many as "Little Aetna," moved to 55 Elm Street in 1957. The latter moved to its present headquarters on Farmington Avenue in 1931.
Believe it or not, this is how Washington Street once looked. The postcard is undated, but it appears to have been made in the late 1890s or early 1900s, when some of the city's finest homes lined the street.
Thanks to Hartford native Bill Waters for this 1910 postcard depicting the pond in Colt Park. The pond was located just inside the park's Wethersfield Avenue entrance. It's gone now.
